Exhibition: Full Circle
Bilk Gallery has completed a full circle - from its original location as part of Workshop Bilk in Queanbeyan, to the gallery shop-front in Manuka, it is now once again connected to a workshop in the beautiful rural setting of Carwoola, ten minutes out of Canberra.
“Adding to my TRAPPED series presented by Bilk Gallery in 2017, my latest works continue to play with the conventions of traditional fine jewellery by exploring the relationship between ‘gems’ and their metal ‘settings’. The gems in this case are precisely engineered spheres made of industrially manufactured materials, such as silicon nitride and synthetic corundum (chemically identical to natural rubies and sapphires), and in place of traditional mounting systems the gem settings are seamlessly integrated into the ring shanks so that they appear as skin-like casings. Each piece is sculpted with a precise cavity into which the spherical gems become trapped and fastened in place using rivets. Only a glimpse of what is trapped within is left visible, while the smooth tactility of the spherical gems is reserved for the wearer.” Cinnamon Lee
